The Bel-Sit has been the best place to eat in Woodford since that time, a classic trattoria, that brilliantly fuses a raucous local atmosphere with decent food and service straight from the “Ciao, bella” school of hospitality.

Megan McKenna has appeared on The Only Way Is Essex and Celebrity Big Brother, getting her first reality TV break on something called Ex On The Beach (I knew none of this until looking it up.

On the first night I spot a chap at the bar who’s been slapped with so much time under the tanning lights, so many sessions under the tubes, that he looks like a version of Spike Milligan when he blacked up to play a Pakistani in the toe-curlingly ill-advised ‘comedy’ Curry and Chips (1969), crossed with Tango Man – the result is closer to bilious orange.

Fat wodges of lobster jammed underneath a just-set, still gooey, sunburst yellow omelette, a rich heady mixture speaking of cream and possibly a slug of cognac, lobster thermidor style, and scattered with a blanket of chopped chives, teeny tiny pieces in the style of fines herbes.

Definitely the best chips in Woodford, too (crunch and fluff in all the right places), that honour having been held previously by Ben Murphy of sadly departed The Woodford – his cracking pont neuf potatoes have buggered off to Launceston Place.

New Openings: Henrietta

Behind the scenes: "Wunderkind" Ollie Dabbous materialised in January 2012 as if from nowhere (in fact, from Le Manoir Aux’ Quat Saisons and Texture) and won a Michelin star within eight months of opening.

Now 35, he moves into a new phase of his career at the Henrietta with the imminent closure of Dabbous and the March closure of its follow-up Barnyard.

Dabbous’ partners, the "global hospitality collective" the Experimental Group, known for Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels and Experimental Cocktail Club, have bars, restaurants and hotels across Paris, New York, Ibiza and London.

REVIEW: Bedouin - University of Cambridge

A great getaway from the Cambridge bubble Bedouin is a lovely little restaurant located on Mill Road, just past Parker’s Piece.

I’m a big fan of lights Flic and I were welcomed in to a completely full restaurant resplendent with Turkish lanterns, bronze camels and striped carpets.

We came to a deal wherein Flic had starter dibs, I had main dibs, and we were happy to share along the way.

Once we’d cleaned these plates entirely, our mains were brought out: chicken and aubergine tagine for me, tagine belda for Flic (slow-cooked lamb tagine).

The Galley Review | London Restaurant Bar Reviews | DesignMyNight

But alas, my dreams of being Ariel (she’s a fish) can’t be fulfilled in this life, so I’ll just have to settle for London’s array of seafood restaurants instead.

Like The Galley, the modern kitchen and bar in Islington whose menu made my eyes light up like a cat staring into a fish pond.

The L-shaped venue is split between the bar area, where people drink cocktails on the type of tables that force you to gaze into each other’s eyes – or at the bar to stare into the bartender’s – and the long restaurant, which has velvet booths and chairs lining the walls below a smattering of framed paintings.

Having brought the type of friend that goes on "client lunches" (I know), we agreed to kick things off with oysters – the oven baked oysters (£3.50), to be precise, that arrived with tomato and crispy chorizo.

Other than the chance of poisoning you, it’s pretty easy for restaurants to make seafood taste ‘fine’.
